Jeera Aloo (Potatoes with cumin)

Jeera aloo is one of the easiest and fastest dishes in Indian vegetarian cuisine. It is simple yet inexplicably irresistible. It is a simple potato dish spiced with cumin seeds. It is also considered as a bachelor’s dish due to its simplicity. At the end of a busy and hectic day, if you need to ease up some stress, this is the dish to go for.

Jeera aloo is also a popular dish among people when fasting, as it is strictly vegetarian. With the ease involved in preparing this dish, it is an excellent dish for those who would like to take a break and not indulge in cooking complicated dishes as it can sometimes get quite taxing! Yet there won’t be any compromise on flavor and gourmet gratification.

This simple and easy treat is for all potato lovers. It can be eaten with rotis, puris or as a side dish with dal and rice.

Ingredients:

Potatoes – 5 medium sized (washed)

Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp

Hing – 1 tsp

Green chillies – 2-3 chopped finely

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Red chilli flakes – 1 tsp

Amchoor powder – 1 tsp

Coriander leaves – finely chopped

Salt – as per taste

Method:

Boil the potatoes with skin on. Peel the skin off the potatoes after boiling. Roughly cut the potatoes into cubes.

Take some oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and hing.

When the cumin seeds start to splutter, add the finely chopped green chillies.

Then add the turmeric powder. Stir quickly for a few seconds.

Now add the boiled and cubed potatoes. Add the red chilli flakes, amchoor powder and salt. Mix gently. Saute the potatoes for 2-3 mins.

Add the chopped coriander leaves. Stir the whole mixture well for a minute.

Serve jeera aloo hot with rotis and dal.
